Surrendering Your Wounds: How God Heals Through Complete Submission

The journey toward healing often begins when we reach the end of ourselves. Many of us carry deep wounds—whether from childhood trauma, broken relationships, or painful life experiences—and we've tried everything to heal on our own. Yet true healing comes when we finally open our clenched fists and surrender these wounds to Yahweh. At Oaks of Righteousness, we've witnessed countless lives transformed not through human effort, but through complete submission to God's healing presence. This surrender isn't weakness; it's the courageous first step toward freedom that Jesus promises when He says, \"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest\" (Matthew 11:28).
The Biblical Foundation of Surrender
Throughout scripture, we see a consistent pattern: healing flows from surrender. When the woman with the issue of blood couldn't find healing anywhere else, she surrendered her last hope to Jesus by reaching for His garment (Mark 5:25-34). When Naaman initially resisted Elisha's simple instructions to wash in the Jordan, healing only came after he surrendered his pride and expectations (2 Kings 5:1-14).
This principle of surrender isn't just about physical healing but addresses our deepest emotional and spiritual wounds. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This closeness happens when we stop hiding our pain from God and instead bring it directly to Him.
Surrender means acknowledging we cannot heal ourselves. It means releasing our timeline, our methods, and our understanding of what healing should look like. It's bringing our wounded hearts to Jesus and saying, "I trust You with this pain.
What Complete Surrender Looks Like
Complete surrender isn't a one-time event but a continuous posture of the heart. It begins with honesty—naming our wounds before God without minimizing or exaggerating them. This honesty requires vulnerability, which can feel frightening, especially for those whose wounds came from trusting others.
Next, surrender involves releasing control. Many of us have built elaborate systems of self-protection around our wounds. We've learned to manage our pain through avoidance, busyness, or even spiritual activities that keep us from facing the deeper issues. Surrendering means dismantling these walls and allowing Jesus access to those tender places.
Finally, surrender means accepting God's timeline and methods. Healing rarely happens on our schedule or in ways we expect. Sometimes God brings instant transformation; other times, He walks with us through a longer process. Surrender means trusting His wisdom in how He chooses to heal us.
Why We Resist Surrendering Our Wounds
If surrender leads to healing, why do we resist it? Often, our wounds become part of our identity. We fear that without them, we might not know who we are. Some of us have carried our pain for so long that, though it hurts, it's also familiar—and the unknown territory of healing feels more frightening than the known territory of pain.
Others resist because past experiences have taught them that vulnerability leads to more hurt. When humans have betrayed your trust, it's natural to hesitate before trusting even God with your deepest wounds. Some resist because they believe surrendering means excusing what happened or forgetting justice.
Yet biblical surrender doesn't mean denying the reality of injustice or pretending we weren't hurt. It means entrusting both our wounds and justice to the One who sees all and judges righteously. It means choosing to release the burden of healing and vengeance into more capable hands than our own.
Take Your Next Step Toward Healing
God doesn't expect perfection in your surrender—just willingness. He meets you exactly where you are, with whatever capacity for trust you currently have. Jesus understands hesitation. In Gethsemane, even He asked if there might be another way before ultimately surrendering to the Father's will.
If you're ready to experience the freedom that comes through surrender, we invite you to connect with our healing community at Oaks of Righteousness.
